The Adoption Scenario of the World: `Adoption’ is a `concept’ as old as human civilisation. It is said to have existed in ancient Rome from where it is said to have spread to Babylonia, Greece, Egypt, Continental Europe, Russia and South America, United States of America and including Japan.
Adoptions Scenario in and from India: Adoption in India is said to be as old as the Indus Valley Civilization. In the ancient times, Adoption was always known as a purely secular ceremony. Adoption was fundamentally done between two Hindu families. Adoption was done for the purpose of attaining one’s spiritual salvation, and to maintain the customary belief that only through a son, man could conquer the world and through a grandson, man could conquer morality. But when man knew that his endeavor may not always succeed, he conceded for a secondary son, who was accordingly called the `Dattaka Putra’, which means Adopted Son. Hence, basically a child was adopted, for the purpose of attaining moksha that is for the purpose of reaching the heavenly abode. Perpetuation of one’s lineage only had a secondary significance. In the modern era, Adoption has assumed an entirely different meaning, significance and concept. The present day focus has shifted from `parent centered’ to `child centered’ adoption. In other words the concept has shifted from `child for a family’ to `family for a child’. Adoption is at present, not done or meant for one’s spiritual or self motivated goals, but to love, nuture, educate and bring up a child and give the child the status, position and the rights, as that of a biological child in marriage. Adoptions are now mainly done by the issueless, due to infertility problems, which at present.
